SPORTS AND TRADITIONAL AND NATIVE GAMES.

The large cultural variety that converges in the Canary archipelago brings about many games and sports that attract the attention and effort of the island dwellers.

There is a generalised opinion that the common games among the aborigines came to be practiced in all the islands. There is ample evidence of the presence of the stick game (Juegos del palo), Throwing and ducking Stones (Lanzamiento y esquiva de piedras), Throwing and pulsing stones (Lanzamiento y pulseo de piedras), Shepherd Jumping (Salto del pastor), Jumping the pole (Salto de vara) and Canary wrestling (Lucha canaria), the latter is also well known in other areas of the world.

There are other games that reached the archipelago after the Spanish conquest of the Canary Islands, although they have suffered some kind of metamorphosis. Some of them are: Cattle dragging (Arrastre de ganado), Billiards (Billarda), Canary bowling (Bola canaria), “Calabazo”, Horse racing with a ring, Pigeon Racing (Colombofilia), “Cucañas”, Sliding on planks (Deslizarse sobre tablas), Plow Raising (levantamiento de arado), Cockfighting (Peleas de gallo), handball (pelotamano), boats and sailing boats with Latin sail (Botes y barquillos de vela latina), among others.

Those that have evolved the most until becoming international sports are Canary wrestling (Lucha canaria), Canary bowling (Bola canaria) and Stick wrestling (Lucha del garrote).
